Tip #2: Outer Beveled Button.

step1 Create a new image (the size you want to) and create a new layer (name it outside). Select the marquee tool ( rectangle or elliptical it depends the shape you want the button to be) and create a shape (I choose round for this example).

Now, choose 2 colors of the same tones, one dark one light (I choose light blue and dark blue for this example).

Select the gradient tool, make sure you have the following options in the option box (see the step 3 sample).

Click at the top-left of you marquee selection and drag to the bottom-right.

Create a new layer and name it inside. Go to Select-Modify-Contract (4) and go to Select-Modify-Smooth (4). If you are working with a rectangular shape don't smooth the selection.

Select the gradient tool and repeat step 4 but start at the bottom-right and drag to the top-left of your selection. Press ctrl D to deselect your selection

To add a smoother effect to your button, gaussian blur your layer inside. Just go to Filter-Blur-Gaussian blur (I used 2.5 blur for the circle and 1.2 for the square).

If you want to change the light direction just inverse step 4 and step 6.
